About food regulatory advisor
The advisor audits plants: walking the process from intake of raw material to dispatch, setting it against the requirements and writing up where the two part company. Diagnoses are developed, which means naming what led to a non-compliance, and control activities are then monitored to see whether a recommendation was actually carried out. Engineering drawings are read to judge the route a product takes through a hall and the risk of cross-contamination.
The advisor's work rests on expertise in food processing, food analysis, quality, safety, certification and traceability. The advisor knows the physical, chemical and biological hazards of the food and beverage sector and knows food allergies, since an undeclared allergen is a reason to pull a batch off the market. Laboratory science and shelf-life studies support the dates printed on a pack.
A food regulatory consultant also works on labels: drafts and updates label templates, prepares nutrition declarations and signs off the wording so that product and label both meet the applicable standards. The role also leads process optimisation work and develops strategic plans for the plant.
