About publishing rights manager
The rights manager knows copyright law, knows what the publisher acquired from the author and for which territory, and establishes on that basis what may be sold on. Publication rights are negotiated along with contract terms with authors and their representatives: the advance, the royalty rate, the term of the licence and the territory.
The manager assesses the profitability of each deal: the print run a given market will bear and the cost of translation. A network is built across the trade — publishers, agents, translators, film producers. The work schedule is kept, along with the dates for which licences were granted.
The publishing rights manager also manages the staff of the rights department and assigns markets and titles to them. They negotiate with artists and organise the sale of rights so that a book can be published in translation or adapted for the screen.
