About producer
Money is the first responsibility and the one the role is defined by. The producer manages the budgets and assesses profitability.
Judging the material comes next. The producer analyses the script, applies strategic thinking to what is worth making and for whom, and works from marketing principles. Assessing financial viability means checking the budget, the expected turnover and the risk before a project goes ahead. For the production itself, the producer consults with the production manager, oversees the recording and the editing, and manages the logistics of a schedule in which people, places and equipment have to be available at the same time and are each available only sometimes.
Two further things are permanent. The producer works from copyright law, which governs what may be used, by whom and on what terms, and builds a network of specialists in the field.
