About music producer
The producer listens to demo versions of songs and judges whether they are strong enough to publish, identifying musical works with commercial potential, which means hearing what a rough recording could become rather than what it currently is. The producer then negotiates with artists over the terms, the rights, the schedule and what the record is going to be.
The producer handles the technical aspects of recording and editing, decides what is kept and what is re-recorded, and keeps the sound of the record consistent across recording sessions. Knowledge of musical instruments is needed to make those calls and to ask a player for something specific.
The producer also manages budgets, assesses viability before a project is committed, and implements strategic plans so that a release fits what the company is doing. The producer also needs knowledge of copyright law, which determines who holds the rights to a recording and who is paid. Liaison with sponsors, who may help fund a release, is part of the role as well.
