Water quality analyst

A water quality analyst is a person who protects the quality of water through scientific analysis, establishing that the quality and safety standards are being met. The analyst takes water samples, carries out laboratory testing, and develops the treatment procedures that make water fit for drinking, for irrigation and for other supply purposes.

About water quality analyst

Sampling comes first. The analyst takes the samples, and a sample taken from the wrong place, at the wrong time or into the wrong container describes something other than the water it was meant to represent. Everything the laboratory does afterwards rests on this step.

Analysis is the technical core. The analyst carries out the water testing procedures, performs the chemical analysis of water, works from chemical processes and laboratory techniques, records the data obtained during testing, and interprets scientific data to assess water quality. Interpretation is a separate skill from measurement: a result has to be read against the standard, the method's limits and what is normal for that source.

Treatment is where the analysis becomes useful. The analyst develops the procedures that correct what the testing found, which is a different problem for drinking water, for irrigation and for industrial supply. Personal protective equipment is used throughout.
