About chemistry technician
The chemistry technician works by laboratory technique: preparing samples and reagents, running determinations, titrating, measuring acidity, carrying out gravimetric work and using analytical instruments. Chemical experiments are performed to procedure, so that a result can be repeated. Chemicals are handled properly: their labelling, safety data sheets, storage and what to do about a spill are all part of the job.
Analysis is also work with data. The technician analyses chemical substances, processes the results, compares them against requirements and reports on the work — in a test report, as an entry in a system, or as a remark passed to a chemist or a process technologist. Assistance in scientific research belongs here where a laboratory serves science.
In a production plant, process supervision is added. The technician manages chemical process inspections: taking samples from the plant at set points and set times, judging whether the process is running inside its range, and reporting a departure before it affects a whole batch. Chemical processes are understood, so the technician knows what can go wrong at a given stage. Chemical technician education requirements are set by the employer; a technical chemistry qualification or a laboratory course is one route in.
