About pet and pet food shop manager

The manager's responsibilities begin with selling. Sales targets are set and the manager works the shop towards them, maximising sales revenue through what is stocked, how it is displayed and what is promoted. Purchase terms are negotiated with suppliers of animals, feed and equipment, covering price, delivery and quality. Relationships with regular customers are maintained and built on over time, and the manager uses whatever channels reach them, from conversation in the shop to email and social media.

On the premises side, the manager obtains the relevant permits and keeps them valid and ready for inspection, manages anti-theft measures, and applies employment legislation to the staff employed in the shop.

The post calls for commercial judgement, enough knowledge of the animals sold to supervise advice given across the counter, and the organisation to keep stock, staffing and permits in order at once. Formal requirements are set by the employer and by the national rules on selling live animals.
