About music arranger
The arranger starts from the composer's score and settles who plays what. The piece is interpreted, adapted or rewritten: melody and accompaniment are divided between instruments, registers are chosen, extra voices are added, and the music is transposed into a key that suits a singer or an ensemble. Scores are altered and read fluently; the arrangement is written out on paper or in notation software.
An arranger's knowledge covers musical instruments and orchestration, harmony, polyphony and composition technique. That knowledge tells the arranger how far a trumpet's range reaches, which spacing turns muddy in a low register, and how to lay a chord across a string section without leaving a hole in the middle. Creative elements are defined and musical concepts developed together with the composer, the performer or the producer.
The job calls for fluent command of notation and of musical instruments, knowledge of harmony and polyphony, and the ability to transpose a piece.
