About music director

The music director leads an orchestra or an instrumental group: setting tempo, dynamics and entries, positioning the players so they can hear each other, and running rehearsals from the first read-through to a finished performance. Orchestral sketches are developed, scores altered and music arranged when the available forces differ from those a piece was written for.

The music director evaluates musical concepts, matches repertoire to what an ensemble can do and to the occasion, and fits music to scenes when working on a film, a video or a staged production. The music director also leads recording sessions, records the performance and analyses the recorded result.

The music director also organises musical events: building the programme, agreeing rehearsal dates, the line-up and the technical side. The settings include the film industry, music video production, radio stations, bands and schools. The work calls for skill in arranging music, reading and altering scores, and leading players through rehearsal and performance. Formal requirements are set by the employer.
