About gas distribution engineer
The engineer designs distribution mains and service connections: diameters, material, pressure, the route, and the placing of pressure reduction stations and valves, with calculations run on expected peak-hour demand, because a network sized for average demand would not cope at peak times. The engineer applies engineering principles, uses technical drawing software and coordinates the route with the other services in the street.
The engineer knows pipeline types, the properties of gaseous fuel and the safety requirements for goods carried by pipeline: distances from buildings, depth of cover, marking, controlled zones and the rules for working inside them. The engineer ensures compliance with pipeline infrastructure regulations and prepares the documentation for approvals.
The engineer selects solutions with the cost of construction and operation in mind, with reduction of gas losses and with environmental impact, and when extending a network takes account of other fuel distribution systems and of renewable energy.
