About anaerobic digestion plant operator

The operator feeds the digester with feedstock such as food waste, animal manure, sludge and processing residues, holds the temperature, mixing and retention time, and watches the composition of the feed. Disposal of the food waste arriving at the plant is handled too.

The operator monitors plant production and digester performance, runs quality control analysis — biogas composition, methane and hydrogen sulphide content, pH and volatile fatty acids in the digestate — and decides from that whether to change the feed rate. Biocatalytic processes are developed for new feedstocks.

The operator carries out regular inspections, diagnoses and clears faults — blocked pumps, leaks, mixer failures — and maintains the biogas plant as a whole. Workplace safety measures are applied and health and safety rules observed, because biogas is explosive and hydrogen sulphide is toxic at low concentrations. Formal requirements, such as certificates for work on gas and electrical installations, are set by the employer and by local regulations.
