About wearing apparel patternmaker
The patternmaker reads the designer's sketch and works out how to build it: where the seams run, what allowance to leave, how to break a shape into flat pieces, and what makes the cloth fall on a body the way it falls on the drawing. They construct patterns by hand on paper or in software and cut fabrics from them, using hand tools or industrial machines. On a pattern they mark the grain line and the notches that show how the pieces fit together.
The patternmaker makes samples and toiles, fits them, assesses the fit and alters the pattern. Knowledge of garment manufacture helps them build patterns that can be sewn in series production.
For series production, the patternmaker prepares models in a range of sizes to standard sizing systems, operates computerised control systems, checks the garments and runs process control in the clothing industry.
