About train dispatcher

The train dispatcher controls train arrivals and departures: checking signals, setting the route, confirming readiness and authorising departure. Communication with drivers and with train crews stays short and unambiguous, especially when clearing a train for a safe departure. The safety of passengers takes priority over the timetable in this work.

The dispatcher monitors the timetable and the conditions affecting train movement — weather, the state of the equipment, track work, delays arriving from neighbouring stations — and keeps computerised railway traffic records in which every decision is logged with its time.

A railroad dispatcher manages the resources of the station: reordering trains, changing tracks, arranging shunting and switching outgoing freight, and moving to degraded working when equipment fails. Stressful situations are handled calmly and decisions taken quickly. Train dispatcher training ends in a qualifying examination, and national rules can add medical and psychological assessments and periodic re-examination.
