About rail switchperson
The switchperson assists the signaller with their duties and follows their instructions. Railway switches are operated: the point mechanism is moved by lever on the spot or from the signal box, the switch blades are checked for fit against the stock rails, and only then is the route reported as set. Signalling procedures are applied and signals given according to the railway traffic control instructions.
The switchperson confirms each instruction, repeats it back and keeps a record of the tasks performed. Shunting is part of the work too: locomotives and wagons are switched between station tracks, and the handbrake is used to secure vehicles.
The switchperson answers for compliance with the rules and with safety regulations, because a route set wrongly risks a collision or a derailment. Requirements for the post, such as a qualifying examination and periodic medical checks, are set by railway safety regulations.
