About level crossing signalperson
At a level crossing a railway and a road share the same ground, and the purpose of the role is to make sure they do not use it at the same time. The signalperson operates the railway warning systems, works the railway levers, applies the railway signalling control procedures, and operates the railway control panels and the points.
Watching is as much of the job as operating. A crossing has to be clear before it is released to a train, and clear means established by looking rather than assumed from a schedule: a vehicle stopped on the crossing, a pedestrian, an obstruction, a barrier that has not fully lowered.
Communication carries the rest. The signalperson issues verbal instructions, checks the rail traffic control devices, works from a knowledge of signal boxes, and reports to the controllers when something at the crossing changes the situation on the line.
