Rail traffic controller

A rail traffic controller is a person who works the signals and the points that keep trains running safely and to time. The controller works from a signal box, from which the order and the movement of trains is controlled and continuous safety is maintained. Maintaining the safety standards falls to this role during normal running and in an emergency or a crisis alike.

About rail traffic controller

Setting a route is the central act. Every train that passes needs points set, signals cleared and a path reserved that does not conflict with another train, and once a route is set, trains move on it. The controller supervises the daily train timetable, which is the plan the routes are set against, and decides what happens when the plan stops matching reality.

The equipment has to be known and watched. The controller works from a knowledge of signal boxes, operates the boxes fitted with LED indications, checks the rail traffic control devices, looks after the railway signalling equipment, and processes the data coming from the railway control room. Distinguishing differences in colour is a stated requirement, because signalling is read as colour.

Communication is the other safety system. The controller uses several communication channels, between drivers, neighbouring boxes, maintenance crews and the control room.
