About trade development officer
The officer analyses the domestic and foreign market in order to promote and conduct business activity, using market analysis and knowledge of economics to establish which markets offer real opportunities for businesses to sell and invest.
The officer develops trade policy and ensures that trade proceedings comply with the regulations and that businesses are protected against disruption, which covers dumping, sudden import surges and the trade defence measures taken in response.
Regulations governing international import and export, competition law and company law all bear on what may be agreed, and an arrangement that suits two businesses may still be unlawful. The officer builds international relations, keeping in contact with ministries, chambers of commerce and diplomatic missions and with partners in other countries. In those contacts, the officer draws on knowledge of international business. Educational requirements are set by the employer; knowledge of economics, law and international business is the basis.
