About sound mastering engineer
Mastering is the last stage of work on a recording, after tracking and mixing. The engineer assesses the material as a whole: loudness, tonal balance between tracks, width and consistency, then evens these out so that an album sounds of one piece even where the tracks were recorded in different studios months apart.
The engineer operates audio signal processors and audio editing software: equalisation, compression, peak limiting, space. The material is converted into one format after another — for CD, for vinyl and for digital release — with the same quality assured in each, because vinyl has technical limits that a digital file does not.
Mastering is one of the specialities within sound engineering, alongside recording and live work. The engineer manages sound quality and judges it by listening on monitoring equipment, coordinates the studio's playback systems, and adapts to the creative expectations of artists.
