About sound operator
Before rehearsal, the sound operator prepares their own station, installs the sound reinforcement system, positions microphones and speakers, configures the recording equipment and programmes the devices: channel assignments, output levels and effects. They also prepare the sound segments the production needs, supervise the settings and direct the technical staff.
During the performance the operator runs the sound live. They respond to what happens on stage: a performer speaking more quietly than in rehearsal, an audience damping the reverberation, a microphone that has stopped working. Their work affects what the other technicians achieve and is affected by it in turn, which is why they stay in contact with them and work closely with the designers and the performers.
The operator works from plans, instructions and other documents, follows current trends in sound technology, works ergonomically and takes part in fire prevention at the venue. They handle chemicals safely, cleaning agents among them.
