About security alarm technician

The technician installs the detectors and the control systems and, where it is needed, connects them to power and telecommunication lines, so that an alarm signal can be passed on rather than only sounding in the building. The technician checks material compatibility and inspects incoming materials, because a detector, a cable and a panel from different ranges may not work together even when they physically connect.

During commissioning, the technician carries out test runs, tests electronic units, confirms readings with measuring instruments and programs home alarm systems: the zones, the delays, the codes and what happens when a particular sensor is triggered at a particular hour.

The technician explains to prospective users how the installed equipment is used, including how to arm and disarm the system. The technician follows construction health and safety procedures and works ergonomically, including when fitting detectors at height. Licensing of technical security work is set by national rules on the protection of persons and property.
