About building electrician
The work starts with setting out and running cable. The electrician lays it in chases, in conduit and in trunking, joins conductors in boxes and at the distribution board, installs sockets, switches and fittings, and then labels the circuits. The job follows the installation design and the standards that apply in construction.
The electrician uses measuring instruments: testing continuity of the protective conductor, insulation resistance, earth fault loop impedance and the operation of residual current devices, and testing electronic units before an installation is handed over. Installed equipment is checked for proper insulation and for fire risk.
A building electrician knows the state of an existing installation and alters it on request: adding circuits, replacing a board, moving outlets. Incidents are answered quickly. Health and safety procedures for the construction sector are followed and materials inspected before they go in. Work on installations requires a recognised electrical qualification.
