About retail department manager

Sales are the first measure. The manager sets the sales targets, implements the sales strategies, works to maximise sales revenue, and performs sales analysis to see which lines, which days and which arrangements are working. Targets are set for the sales team to reach within a period of time, including the value of sales and the number of new customers.

Cost is the other side of the same account. The manager controls the expenditure and manages the budgets. Controlling expenses covers staffing, overtime and waste, so that costs stay efficient. Holding revenue and cost together is what distinguishes a manager from a senior salesperson.

The staff are what actually deliver it. The manager runs the team of sales staff in the department, allocates the hours against the trading pattern, and works within the employment legislation and the company policies that govern rotas, breaks and contracts.
