About rail maintenance technician
Routine inspection is the backbone of the job. The technician walks and examines the track, inspects the rails for cracks, wear and alignment, detects irregularities before they become a defect, and monitors the condition of the trackside sensors that report on the line between inspections. Construction materials are inspected where work has been done, and the data from each examination is recorded.
The work also covers fault repair. A railway maintenance technician is sent out to put a fault right quickly and safely, at any hour of the day or night.
The post rests on knowledge of mechanics and of how track and structures behave under load and weather, on the accuracy to measure and record consistently, and on strict observance of the health and safety procedures that apply to working on or beside a live railway. Requirements for the post are set by the infrastructure manager and the rail safety rules of each country.
