Pastoral worker

The work of a pastoral worker covers a wide range of duties. The worker runs programmes the community depends on, charitable work and religious observances among them, and conducts religious ceremonies within the limits of their role. Teaching and guidance take up much of the week, sometimes to a group and sometimes as one-to-one mentoring with a single person over a long period. A pastoral care worker also helps members of the community with social, cultural or emotional problems, which can mean listening, practical assistance, or putting someone in touch with services better able to help.

Alongside that, the worker supports the clergy, answers the questions that come to the community from outside and inside it, promotes the community's religious activities, and builds the relationships and cooperation the work runs on.

The role rests on the ability to be trusted with what people tell you, patience over long stretches with no visible progress, and the judgement to know when a problem needs more than pastoral support. Community relations are built here rather than administered. Requirements for the post are set by the religious body concerned, so what is asked of a pastoral worker differs between denominations and between countries.
