Mining electrician

A mining electrician is a person who installs, maintains and repairs the specialist electrical mining equipment used underground and on the surface, working from a knowledge of electrical principles. Monitoring the power supply across the mine belongs to the same role.

About mining electrician

The equipment is the first subject. The electrician assembles electrical mining machines, maintains them on a schedule, and troubleshoots the faults that stop them. Operating manuals for electrical mining machinery are part of the working knowledge. These manuals are used when installing, maintaining and repairing the machines.

The conditions change how the work is done. A mine is wet, dusty and confined, and a fault that would be an inconvenience in a workshop stops production at the face. The electrician works from an understanding of electricity itself as well as from repair procedures.

Shift handover and records are also part of the work. The electrician passes on the relevant information when a shift changes, so that the next crew knows the state of the equipment, and keeps the record of mining operations. Training the machine operators in how to use the equipment also falls to the electrician.
