About mine electrical engineer
The engineer works from the operating instructions for electrical mining machinery, installs electrical mining machines and organises the replacement and repair of electrical equipment and its components, in an environment that is wet, dusty, confined and in places explosive, where in coal mines a spark from faulty equipment can ignite methane or coal dust.
The engineer ensures that the work complies with safety regulations. What may be energised, in which part of a mine, in what enclosure and under what supervision is set by law and by the mine's own rules.
The engineer develops improvements to electrical systems as the mine workings advance, and prepares and revises the design drawings for the networks and equipment. The engineer supervises staff who do the installation work and manages the emergency procedures, such as those for a power failure, a fire or a methane hazard. The engineer also purchases electrical machines, taking into account their technical specifications and safety requirements. Qualifications for supervisory posts in mines are set by national mining law.
