About heat treatment furnace operator
Heat treatment changes what a metal is rather than what it looks like. A casting goes into the furnace with one set of properties and comes out with another, and the change is produced by a temperature held for a time and a cooling carried out at a rate. The operator works the heat treatment furnace to that cycle.
Reading the instruments is the control task. The operator interprets the computer, measurement and control data, troubleshoots what the readings do not explain, and monitors compliance with the production quality standards. The property being produced cannot be seen, so it is inferred from the process record and confirmed by test.
Records and safety complete the role. The operator keeps the system logs and prepares the scientific reports that evidence a treatment, extracts the materials from the furnace, ensures compliance with the safety regulations, and looks after the safety of the workers, in a place where the hazard is heat at a scale that does not forgive carelessness.
