About gravure press operator
When setting up the press, the operator mounts the cylinders, sets the pressure of the doctor blade that wipes off surplus ink, adjusts web tension and tracking, and chooses ink viscosity and drying temperature. The operator configures the control panel for the run and, on multi-colour work, sets the register.
While the press runs the operator watches both machine and product. The operator makes test runs, checks colour density and register, uses colour printing software and acts on deviations: streaks, missing ink in the cells, dot bridging, static on the web. The operator also troubleshoots problems.
The operator cleans the printing cylinders and the ink system, because dried ink in the engraved cells spoils the image, and works to the production schedule. Knowledge of printing materials and techniques tells the operator how film, paper and board behave in the same press.
Key Work Functions

- Install and align gravure cylinders according to job specifications and technical drawings
- Set up the press controller and input job parameters such as print speed, colour specifications, and pressure settings
- Load substrate materials and adjust tension to ensure proper registration
- Perform colour and shade matching using colour printing programs and prepress proofs
Production Monitoring and Quality Control
- Continuously monitor the automated printing process to detect deviations in colour, registration, or print quality
- Conduct periodic quality checks during production runs and compare printed samples against quality standards
- Adjust ink viscosity, pressure, and colour values to maintain consistency throughout the print run
- Record production data and follow the production schedule to meet delivery deadlines
Machine Maintenance and Troubleshooting
- Perform routine maintenance tasks including cleaning ink rollers, replacing doctor blades, and checking for wear
- Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions such as registration issues, ink supply problems, or mechanical failures
- Supply the machine with ink, substrate, and other consumables as needed to maintain continuous operation
- Communicate equipment issues to maintenance technicians and follow up on repairs
Test Run Execution
- Conduct test runs before full production to validate machine settings and colour accuracy
- Produce prepress proofs and compare them against customer specifications and approved colour standards
- Make fine adjustments to achieve exact colour matching and ensure quality approval before high-volume production
Safety and Compliance
- Follow all safety precautions when operating the gravure press, including proper lockout/tagout procedures
- Wear required personal protective equipment and maintain a clean, hazard-free work environment
- Report safety concerns and incidents to supervisors and participate in safety training programs
