About gate guard
The gate is a decision point. Every person, vehicle and load that passes is either authorised or not, and the guard has to establish which under time pressure, with people who expect to be let through. Security checks are carried out at this point, and ticket checks at the entrance to an event venue work the same way.
Noticing is the skill the role rests on. The guard detects threats to security, stays alert through long periods in which nothing happens, manages the anti-theft mechanisms in place, and works from a knowledge of illegal substances where that is part of what is being looked for. Dealing with major incidents belongs to the role as well.
Service runs alongside security. The guard attends to the safety and the needs of visitors, helps employees and guests with requests and directions, and uses portable radios, alarm systems and computers. The gate is the first point of contact for visitors, so courtesy matters, including when entry is refused.
