About store detective
The store detective monitors the sales floor: walking the aisles, observing behaviour at the shelves and using the camera feed. Security threats are detected and shoplifting prevented before it happens — through presence in the areas most exposed to loss, through how goods are displayed, and through attention to any attempt to remove a security tag. The detective stays alert throughout.
Once an offender is caught in the act, the detective detains the person until the police arrive, conducts an interview and documents the incident: describing what happened, preserving the recording, listing the goods and the witnesses. The detective liaises with the security authorities and hands over the material gathered.
A store detective acts inside the law: what a detective may do after detaining someone caught in the act, such as searching or questioning them, depends on national law, and the police are informed.
