A furniture finisher is a person who works the surface of wooden furniture with hand tools and power tools, sanding, cleaning and polishing it, and who applies the coatings that protect and decorate it.

About furniture finisher

The finisher cleans the wood surface and sands it through successive grades, because a coating does not hide marks left at this stage but makes them more visible.

Next, the finisher stains the wood to the required shade and makes sure that all pieces in a batch match in colour. Coatings are then applied by brush, by spray gun or by other wood finishing techniques, and the appropriate coating is selected for protection, for decoration or for both. Paints and finishes are mixed to the required colour and consistency, and the spraying equipment is cleaned afterwards.

The finisher also repairs minor scratches, matching the repair to the existing surface of the piece. Health and safety standards are followed throughout, as finishes and thinners are flammable and their vapours are harmful in an enclosed space.
