About funeral attendant

The attendant moves coffins together with other bearers, in step and also on uneven ground, in full view of the family. They arrange flowers around the coffin, set out and manage the funeral equipment, the bier, the stands, the covers and the lowering gear, and help remove that equipment once the ceremony is over.

The attendant also looks after guests, greeting them, helping them reach the right place and providing customer care to the family of the deceased, including answering questions about the ceremony. Dealing with the family and other mourners calls for diplomacy, and the attendant directs mourners to where they should stand or sit.

Personal hygiene standards are maintained throughout, as is respect for the dignity and rights of the deceased and of the mourners. Formal requirements are set by the employer and by national funeral regulations.
