Foundry operative

A foundry operative is a person who produces castings, among them tubes, conduits, hollow sections and other semi-finished steel products, by operating manually controlled equipment in a foundry.

About foundry operative

The operative controls the flow of molten ferrous and non-ferrous metals into the moulds and works to create the conditions that give the best metal quality: the right temperature, the right speed, a mould that is dry and properly vented. The flow is watched for defects as it happens, and where a defect appears the operative notifies the authorised personnel and takes part in removing it.

The operative also creates casting moulds, selects the types of mould to use, ensures the moulds are uniform, fills them, moves the filled moulds and extracts the products from them once they have set.

The operative interprets instructions for the production of metal components, that is the drawings and specifications for each casting. The operative also solves problems that arise during production. The work is hot, heavy and close to molten metal, so it requires following procedures, using protective equipment and keeping to the order of operations.
