About casting machine operator

The operator sets the machine and supervises it while it processes ferrous and non-ferrous metals in the molten state, precious metal alloys among them. They fill casting moulds, direct the flow of molten metal, and look after the conditions in which the metal solidifies: the temperature, the pouring rate and the venting of the mould. They ensure the uniformity of the moulds, because a mould that differs from the rest yields a casting of different dimensions.

The operator observes the flow of metal in order to detect faults, and on seeing one notifies the authorised personnel and takes part in putting it right. Once the metal has set, the operator extracts products from the moulds and works them over with casting repair tools wherever a defect can be repaired.

Knowledge of casting processes, of non-ferrous metal processing and of metal joining technologies makes it possible to predict how a given metal will behave as it is poured and cooled. Formal requirements are set by the employer and by the safety rules that apply to hot work.
