About forest ranger
Day to day, the ranger protects the forest against damage of several kinds: illegal felling, fire, dumping, theft of timber and the destruction done by vehicles and by crowds. The ranger carries out safety inspections across the area they are responsible for, and works to prevent waste, fuel or chemicals from polluting soil or water.
The ranger also looks after the stand, working on tree care and protection, with young plantings, damaged trees and the ones that have become dangerous near a path, and on habitat restoration where ground has been degraded. The ranger follows the principles of sustainable forest management, which set what may be taken out and what has to be left.
The ranger takes forestry management decisions on the basis of those principles and of environmental legislation, which sets what is protected and what is permitted. Powers, uniform and training requirements are set by national forestry law.
