About doorman/doorwoman
The doorman job description sits where service meets security. The doorman greets each arriving guest, handles and carries luggage, and parks guests' vehicles or arranges for them to be parked. Guests with particular needs are assisted directly, which can mean a wheelchair, a door held, or help getting bags and a person from a car into a lobby without fuss. Information about customers is checked where the venue requires it, so that the right people are admitted and the house knows who is on the premises.
Security is the quieter half of the work. A hotel doorman watches for signs of alcohol and drug misuse among those arriving, decides whether someone should be admitted, and acts as the first and most visible deterrent at the entrance. Where food and drink are served, the venue's health, safety and hygiene rules apply to this role too.
Anyone asking about the career path of a hotel doorman should know that the work is built on customer service: presence, memory for faces and names, courtesy that does not slip, and judgement about people formed in a few seconds. Requirements for the post are set by the employer.
