About bartender
Before opening, the bartender prepares the bar for service: refilling bottles, ice, fruit and garnishes, checking glassware, setting the tools within reach. Opening and closing procedures are enforced, the stock of alcohol and the till among them.
The bartender presents the drinks menu, advises, and prepares what is ordered: pouring beer with the right head and temperature, mixing cocktails to proportion, serving wine and soft drinks. Glassware is kept clean and in good condition. Payments are processed and bills settled in front of the guest.
The bartender also serves guests who have been drinking: recognising who should not be served another, knowing the prohibition on serving minors and intoxicated customers, and knowing how to refuse without inflaming a situation. Food safety and hygiene rules are observed. Formal requirements are set by the employer. The premises need a licence to sell alcohol, and the legal drinking age is enforced at the point of service.
