About civil registrar
The work is exact rather than procedural. The registrar reviews the civil documentation, checks the official documents presented, and keeps the register of births and the register of deaths. For a birth, the registrar takes the details from the parents, enters them in the register and issues the birth certificate; for a death, the registrar checks that the cause has been established and records the information given by a relative or someone close to the deceased.
Part of the role is ceremonial and public. The registrar solemnises marriages and officially certifies the conclusion of civil partnerships, conducting the ceremony itself. It is an administrative act carried out as an occasion, and both aspects have to be held at once.
Discretion runs through everything. The registrar maintains confidentiality. Acting discreetly means attending to details without drawing attention, and the information in the registers is shared only with those entitled to it.
