About brigadier

The work is planning and oversight rather than direct action. A brigadier directs the strategic and tactical planning for the brigade, monitors its operations as they run, and manages the brigade headquarters through which those operations are coordinated. Troop deployment is decided and managed at this level: which units go where, in what order, and with what they need to function once they arrive. Resource planning and military logistics sit alongside that, because a formation of this size moves only as fast as its supply does.

The brigadier keeps communication running throughout an operation, between the headquarters and the units in the field, and makes sure that what the brigade does in barracks and in the field conforms to the policy it has been given.

The appointment calls for knowledge of military weaponry and logistics, the administrative grip to run a headquarters, and the judgement to commit forces on incomplete information. A brigade officer at this level is also bound to uphold human rights, which constrains what may lawfully be ordered. A brigadier is appointed through a national armed service, so the requirements, the rank structure and the route to it are set by each country's military.
