About wood boring machine operator
Boring differs from milling in the direction of the main movement: a boring tool works into the part, while a milling tool works across its surface. The operator works wood, which means knowing how a species behaves: where it splinters on exit, how it moves with moisture, and which bit leaves a clean edge in it. The operator knows the types of drill bits, such as brad point, auger and Forstner bits, and chooses the right one for the job.
The operator configures the machine control panel, sets depths, spacings and speeds, and runs test pieces before production starts, to check that holes are in the right place and at the right depth.
Automatic machines are monitored while they run, and the operator reacts when a machine behaves differently from usual. Problems are solved at the machine, and equipment availability is kept up so that a run is not stopped by a missing bit. Machinery is operated safely throughout, since drill bits turn at high speed. Requirements for the job are set by the employer.
