A sawmill operator is a person who works the automatic milling equipment that cuts logs into rough timber, and who runs the various saws that then process that timber into different shapes and sizes.

About sawmill operator
The operator handles timber, judging how a log should be broken down to get the most usable boards out of it, and applies knowledge of wood processing and wood cutting to decide the order of cuts. Cut size is adjusted for the product being made, and test pieces are run before a batch.
Many of these processes are now computer controlled, so the operator works at a panel as much as at a machine, watching the readings and intervening when the material does not behave as the settings assume. Problems are solved at the machine as they arise.
The operator keeps the sawing equipment in good condition, since a blunt or badly tensioned blade leaves a rough face and wanders off line. The work is done safely throughout, because logs and timber are heavy and the blades are large. Formal requirements are set by the employer.
