About webmaster
The role covers two distinct areas of responsibility. The first is the server: uptime, security, backups and the performance of what the site runs on. The other is the site itself: what is published, how it reads and whether it looks like one thing. A webmaster answers for both.
The technical ground is broad rather than deep. The webmaster works with stylesheet languages, scripting languages, software libraries, graphics editors, proxy servers and digital systems, and resolves problems using ICT tools and equipment. Online collaboration platforms are where the work with contributors happens.
Backup and system integrity belong to the server side of the role and are part of what the webmaster answers for. The webmaster checks regularly that the site can actually be restored from a backup.
