About tyre vulcaniser
A repair starts with assessing the damage. The vulcaniser inspects worn tyres, establishes where the damage runs and whether a repair is permissible, because a cut sidewall or a broken casing puts a tyre out of use. The repair area is cleaned and prepared, rubber patches applied and cured — vulcanised — so that the patch becomes one with the tyre.
The scope of the work covers the whole wheel. The vulcaniser removes and fits tyres, fits inner tubes where they are used, lines the inside of a tyre with a sealing layer, and balances the wheel, because an unbalanced wheel causes vibration in the steering and wears the suspension faster.
The vulcaniser also retreads tyres: mounting a tyre on a mould and applying a new tread, for example on truck tyres, whose casing can take more than one tread. The work is physical and involves contact with rubber, adhesives and heat. The job requires knowledge of how a tyre is built, of repair materials and of the hand tools and machines used.
Key Work Functions
Core areas of responsibility for a tyre vulcaniser.
Tyre Inspection and Assessment

- Adjust internal bag structures inside tyres to ensure proper shape and support
Repair and Patching
- Apply rubber patches to damaged areas using adhesives and vulcanizing techniques
- Rebuff tyres by removing old rubber and preparing surface for new material application
- Coat the inside of tyres with appropriate rubber compounds as needed for repairs
Vulcanizing Equipment Operation
- Clamp prepared tyres into vulcanizing moulds correctly to ensure proper curing
- Adjust vulcanizing machine settings for temperature, pressure, and curing time
- Monitor the vulcanization process to ensure quality results and prevent equipment damage
Quality Control and Safety
- Balance repaired tyres to ensure proper weight distribution and smooth operation
- Wear appropriate protective gear including safety equipment at all times
