About tyre fitter

The fitter changes tyres, balances them so that the wheel runs without vibration at speed, checks that the wheels are correctly aligned, and cleans tyres and wheels before they go back on. Inspections of worn tyres establish whether a tyre is legal and safe: tread depth, uneven wear that points to a suspension fault, sidewall damage, age and the marks left by driving on low pressure. Repaired tyres are inspected again before they are released.

The fitter also advises customers on the different types of tyre and wheel, which means matching a tyre to the vehicle, the load, the season and how the car is used. The fitter explains the differences between tyre types, such as summer, winter and all-season tyres.

The fitter ensures compliance with safety standards and regulations: a tyre below the legal limit does not go back on. Technical equipment is cared for and kept available, such as the wheel balancer and the tyre changer. Every wheel is tightened to the correct torque. Requirements for the job are set by the employer.
