About tile fitter
Before the first tile goes on, the fitter checks the background. The flatness of wall and floor is assessed, along with the soundness of the plaster and the screed, the moisture content and the falls, because a tile laid on an uneven or dusty background can come away. The surface is prepared — primed, levelled, and in wet rooms waterproofed — and straight lines are snapped with a chalk line to set out the first row.
Laying comes down to cutting and bedding. The tile fitter cuts tiles to size and shape, cuts holes for pipes and sockets, applies tile adhesive chosen for the tile and the background, and then beds the tiles, keeping one plane and even joints. Types of tile and types of adhesive are known, because porcelain, terracotta and large-format tiles each need a different adhesive and a different way of spreading it.
The work closes with grouting the joints and sealing the corners and the junctions with a bath. The fitter inspects materials before they go in, transports construction materials and works ergonomically. The fitter may also take part in artistic projects such as mosaics. Entry comes through a vocational qualification in interior finishing work.
