Stage director

A stage director is a person who oversees and organises the mounting of a production by bringing together the different undertakings and aspects a theatrical production is made of. The director answers for the quality and the completeness of the production and leads the members of the creative teams towards realising the artistic vision.

About stage director

The work starts with the text. The director analyses the script, adapts the script where the production requires it, and develops the production process for a dramatic work.

Casting and the creative teams come next. The director holds the auditions, assesses the quality of artistic work, and adapts the designers' output to the venue.

Running the production is the final part. The director manages the course of the performance, which covers the rehearsal process through to how the show is handed over to the company that will perform it, and finds a replacement for the stage manager when that becomes necessary. A director's authority is persuasive rather than technical: the work is realised by actors, designers and technicians, each of whom has to understand the intention well enough to make their own decisions inside it.
