About rail construction supervisor
The supervisor allocates tasks either out on the track or from a signal box, and makes quick decisions when something has to change: a late possession, a failed machine, a defect found under a rail. Resource allocation is planned in advance, covering crews, machines and the engineering trains that bring materials and plant to a site with no road access. The supervisor understands the mechanical systems on those machines well enough to judge whether a fault can wait.
As the work proceeds, the supervisor performs quality control analysis on completed sections and carries out inspections of construction materials, since sleepers, ballast, fastenings and rail all have to meet specification before they go into a track that trains will run over.
The supervisor ensures compliance with health and safety standards, secures the work area so that no one can be caught by a movement on an adjacent line, and supervises staff. Formal requirements are set by national railway rules.
