About police inspector

The inspector assigns the work, oversees how it is carried out, develops operational strategies for law enforcement, and monitors the performance of the officers in the division.

Professional knowledge is what the supervision rests on. The inspector works from criminology, from investigative methods, and from the rules on the lawful use of force. Reviewing how officers under supervision apply those rules is part of the job.

Casework does not disappear at this level. The inspector examines legal evidence, examines crime scenes, takes witness statements, and ensures that the law is applied in the cases the division handles. The administrative side is the other constant: records that are complete, reports that are filed, and a division whose decisions can be reconstructed afterwards by someone who was not there.
