About personal property appraiser
The appraiser values an item by its age, its present condition, its quality and the repairs it will need. Each of those is established by examination and by research rather than by impression: comparable sales, catalogues, provenance and the literature on the maker. The appraiser also carries out market research, since the value of an item for sale depends on current demand. The appraiser determines the resale value of assets and gathers the financial information a valuation has to rest on, then prepares valuation reports setting out the figure and the reasoning behind it.
For insurance valuations, the appraiser works with insurance law, analyses insurance risk and insurance needs, and brings risk management into the report, including the value for which an item should be insured.
Formal requirements differ by country and by the category of property being valued.
