About insurance underwriter
The decision is the product of the role. An application is accepted, declined, or accepted with conditions, an excess or a loading, and the underwriter has to be able to justify which. Insurance law, the principles of insurance and actuarial science are what turn a judgement into a defensible one.
Commercial risk is assessed on site as well. The underwriter inspects the condition of business premises, examines the control policies a company has in place, and reviews commercial risk.
Specialisation shapes a career here. An underwriter may work in life insurance, health insurance, reinsurance, commercial insurance or mortgage insurance, and the technical knowledge differs sharply between them. The underwriter also develops the insurance policy wording, develops the terms of cooperation with brokers and partners, draws up a financial plan, works from property law and gathers the financial information a decision rests on.
